Tuvstarr by the Water is one of John Bauer's most iconic and beloved illustrations. Painted in 1913 for the fairy tale, “The Story of the Moose Bull Leap and Little Princess Tuvstarr” for that year’s edition of Among Gnomes and Trolls.
His paintings of Tuvstarr have become more famous than the saga itself, especially the image Tuvstarr by the Water.
In Swedish, the original title is Ännu sitter Tuvstarr kvar och ser ner i vattnet, which translates to “Still, Tuvstarr is Sitting and Looking Down into the Water.”
