A Knight Rode Forth is an illustration for the fairy tale by the same name, and was first published in the 1915 edition of Among Gnomes and Trolls.
In the story, a knight lost in the forest encounters a simple farm girl. She helps him find the way back but she cannot stop thinking about him. Every time she sends him a thought, she grows more and more beautiful until she turns into a true princess. Sadly, the knight dies, but his heart is transformed into a swan with a bleeding heart who returns to the princess in the forest.
